Opinion: Beyond the Diploma: Utah’s First Credential Program Delivers Real Opportunity

Utah is projected to see roughly 230,000 job openings each year between 2021 and 2031, most requiring education or training beyond a high school diploma. The First Credential Program is designed to help students graduate with more than a diploma by giving them opportunities to explore careers, earn industry-recognized credentials, and build skills that lead directly to employment or further education.

Students can earn stackable credentials, pursue apprenticeships, gain hands-on experience, and earn college credit while still in high school. During the 2024-25 school year, more than 61,000 Utah high school students earned college credit.

For families, that can mean lower college costs, clearer career pathways, and less unnecessary debt. For employers, it creates a stronger pipeline of young workers with validated skills and real-world experience.

The First Credential Program gives Utah students more options to build a path that fits their goals, whether that means college, technical education, an industry certification, an apprenticeship, or entering the workforce.
