Opinion: Too Much Washington, Not Enough America

When too much authority is concentrated in Washington, every presidential election can feel like a fight over nearly every aspect of American life. Rep. Jason Thompson argues that restoring a clearer division of responsibility between states and the federal government could reduce political polarization while bringing decisions closer to the people they affect.

Federalism gives states room to solve problems, test new approaches, and respond to local needs, while allowing the federal government to focus on its core responsibilities. Thompson argues the goal is not simply smaller government, but government operating at the right level, with clearer accountability for the decisions it makes.
